DURHAM, N.C. - The following highlights from the November 21, 2011 and
December 5, 2011 Durham City Council meetings and other topics of
interest will be featured in this episode of "City Hall This Week." The
show begins airing on Friday, December 9 at 8 p.m. and will also be
available to watch on demand beginning Monday, December 12 at
http://DurhamNC.gov/ich/pa/Pages/DTV8/chtw.aspx.
Third Quarter Crime Report Offers Mixed News
There's mixed news stemming from the Durham Police Department's Third
Quarter Crime Report. While the numbers show a 1 percent decrease in
overall part one violent and property crimes during the first nine
months of 2011 compared to the same period last year, they also show an
increase in violent crime. Police Chief Jose Lopez, Sr. breaks the
report down further on this episode of "City Hall This Week."
City Receives Diesel Emissions Reduction Grant
The City's effort to replace two of its older diesel garbage trucks with
more environmentally-friendly models is getting a boost - thanks to a
grant from the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural
Resources. The $80,000 "Diesel Emissions Reduction Project" grant will
go toward the purchase of two new solid waste vehicles. The grant will
help to offset recent funding cuts while the City is aggressively trying
to replace outdated fleet vehicles.
Boundaries Changed for City's Electoral Wards
Durham's three electoral wards now have new boundaries. The changes were
needed because of the population growth identified in the 2010 Census.
The boundaries for the wards are supposed to contain approximately equal
populations - which they now do with around 76,000 people in each area.
The next election that will be affected by the ward changes will be held
in 2013.
City Council Installs Newly Elected Members
Durham's City Council now features many familiar faces plus one new one.
An installation ceremony was held before the December 5th Council
meeting for the recently elected members. William V. "Bill" Bell will
serve a sixth consecutive term as mayor. Incumbents Diane Catotti and
Eugene Brown, as well as Council newcomer Steve Schewel, will fill the
three at-large seats.
Other interviews featured on this episode of "City Hall This Week":
* Public Works Department Assistant Stormwater Manager Paul Wiebke
- Explains why the City will continue to limit its Stormwater Private
Drainage Assistance Program and in what cases it will be able to help
property owners.
* CJI Research Corporation President Hugh Clark - Discusses the
results of an on-board passenger survey for Durham Area Transit
Authority (DATA) and how the results will help to shape the future of
the bus system.

Public Art Policy and why it was needed.
