Durham's Continuum of Care Providers Win HUD Funding

Renewal Funding to Support Existing Homeless Prevention Programs

DURHAM, N.C. - Durham's homeless housing providers received any early
holiday gift this week from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD) with the renewal of grant funding from HUD's Continuum
of Care Program.

The City's Community Development Department was notified that HUD has
awarded a total of $426,837 in renewed grant funding to four providers
within Durham's Continuum of Care Program to continue their existing
programs to help end homelessness in Durham. The following organizations
and programs received renewal funding:

* Durham Housing Authority's Home Again Program (permanent
supportive housing for individuals and families): $88,236

* Genesis Home's Family Matters Program (transitional housing
for families): $174,999

* Genesis Home's Turning Point Program (permanent supportive
housing for families): $55,346

* Housing for New Hope's Andover I and II Program (permanent
supportive housing for individuals): $45,911

* Urban Ministries of Durham's Community Supportive Housing
Program (permanent supportive housing for individuals): $62,345

According to Reginald Johnson, interim director of the City's Community
Development Department, HUD awarded this funding to ensure these housing
and service programs remain operating in 2012 since they are a critical
part of the Obama Administration's strategic plan to prevent and end
homelessness in America. "These awards enable several of our public and
nonprofit housing providers to continue to operate some 45 beds of
transitional housing for homeless families and nearly 70 beds of
permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless people with
disabilities," Johnson said. "We are grateful that the federal
government continues to partner with Durham to address homelessness and
that our community has these wonderful organizations to help homeless
people get back into housing."

HUD awarded $1.47 billion this week to renew funding to more than 7,100
local homeless programs operating across the country. HUD is renewing
funding through its Continuum of Care programs to existing local
programs as quickly as possible to prevent any interruption in federal
assistance and will award funds to new projects in early 2012.
