Bull Fight 2012: Durham Against the Amendment

The Race to the Ballot (www.racetotheballot.com/) will be coming through Durham on Friday February 17th.   Jen Jones of Equality NC will be running south on 9th street and down to the Pinhook on Main Street starting at 5:30 that evening.  Jen will be accompanied by runners big and small – Running with the Bulls - to raise awareness about the harms of the anti-marriage amendment as well as to register voters.  Following the run, there will be food trucks and family friendly entertainment at the Pinhook.  Durham People’s Alliance and others invite people of conscience to run, walk or simply be present to support this event.  All runners and supporters will be gathering near 9th and Markham at 5:00.

In 2012, North Carolinians will vote on an amendment to the North Carolina constitution that will affect ALL unmarried couples—gay and straight; will cause many adults and their children to lose health insurance; could jeopardize domestic violence protections for all unmarried couples; will keep North Carolina from ever granting civil unions; will hurt North Carolina’s economy; and will use North Carolina’s Constitution to restrict people’s rights.
On campus, NCCU and Duke will be hosting related events including:

* Jen Jones will run from Duke to North Carolina Central University.
* NCCU and Duke are collaborating to host a Campus Rally and Teach-In from 1-3 in the Alfonso  Elder Student Union

* Building, featuring speakers Rev. Jimmy Creech, National  Black Justice Coalition activist Mandy Carter, and State Representative Marcus Brandon.
*The rally will be followed by a panel discussion on the legal implications of the amendment from 3:30-5:30 in the Law School, Room 100.
*“Vote Against” project photo shoot at Duke:10:00 – 3:00 in the Old Trinity Room of the West Union Building.

Durham’s stop is just one of many in a 322 mile trail across North Carolina, from the mountains of Asheville, N.C., to the coastal city of Wilmington, N.C., to raise awareness about the harms of the Amendment.
