Fast Facts:

* At this event, two teams comprised of Durham County high
school students will be displaying their computer-assisted designs as
they compete for a cash prize in the City of Durham Environmental
Awareness High School Challenge Event.

* The purpose of the challenge was to encourage area students to
form teams and apply computing and visualization tools to create
renderings of how sustainable economic development of Brownfield
properties would look in 2021 in the Northeast Central Durham Livability
Initiative geographical area.

* Brownfields are former industrial or commercial sites where
future use is affected by real or perceived environmental contamination.
Brownfield properties contribute to urban blight and can inhibit
economic growth.

* Two teams entered the contest, which incorporated
environmental factors in the design presentation based on the Envirothon
Community Service Learning Project using a five-step process for
environmental issues and problem solving.

* The winning team will take home a $300 prize and the
runner-ups will win $150. The winning team will be selected by a group
of professionals from the Durham County Soil and Water Conservation
District, Durham City-County Inspections Department, and the Stormwater
Services Division with the City of Durham Public Works Department.
