Durham Celebrates Arbor Day Monday

60 Trees and 200 Flower Bulbs to be Planted in Honor of City's Annual
Observance

DURHAM, N.C. - Residents looking for a fun way to help beautify Durham
should mark their calendars now to join the City of Durham as it
celebrates the community's 29th Annual Arbor Day Observance.

On Monday, February 20, 2012, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., residents
can join the City of Durham's Urban Forestry Division, Keep Durham
Beautiful, Inc., and more than 30 students and parents from Voyager
Academy for a morning of tree and flower bulb plantings. The event will
be held in the west-end parking area of Piney Wood Park, located at 400
East Woodcroft Parkway, Durham, N.C. 27713.

Before the plantings begin, welcoming remarks will be provided by Mayor
Pro Tempore Cora Cole-McFadden. After the remarks, attendees will plant
60 trees and 200 flower bulbs to help beautify the park, eliminate areas
from mowing maintenance, and provide shade to the parking lot. Some of
the trees to be planted were salvaged from the City Hall Streetscape
Project and the rest are being provided by Durham Parks and Recreation.
The flower bulbs are being provided by Keep Durham Beautiful.

According to Urban Forestry Manager Alexander Johnson with the City's
Urban Forestry Division in the General Services Department, Durham's
Arbor Day celebration is designed to encourage residents to appreciate,
plant, and care for trees. "The importance of trees in urban areas
cannot be overstated. They buffer noise and light pollution, create cool
and inviting spaces, reduce our need for energy while cleaning the air,
removing carbon, and producing oxygen," Johnson said. "Trees help us
with our soil erosion and stormwater runoff and nutrient load problems.
They also provide critical habitats and foster biodiversity in otherwise
inhospitable environments, and they are the only piece of infrastructure
that gains in value over time, giving us back in benefits many times
over their cost of installation."
