West Main Street Waterline Replacement to Limit Access to Businesses,
Church Beginning This Weekend

Traffic Will Reduce to One Lane in Each Direction from Ninth Street to
Duke's East Campus; Motorists Urged to Use Caution

DURHAM, N.C. - Residents, business owners, and motorists should take
note that travel lanes will be reduced beginning this weekend at the
intersection of West Main and Ninth streets, which will limit access to
businesses along this portion of West Main Street as well as access to
Iredell Street.

The work scheduled for this weekend is part of the City's project to
replace the century-old waterline along West Main Street from Ninth
Street to Campus Drive at Duke's East Campus. The waterline at the
intersection of Main and Ninth streets will be replaced over the weekend
of March 31 and April 1 as the City's contractors continue the West Main
Street Waterline Replacement Project. Travel lanes will be reduced
through the intersection, and there will be no access to Ninth Street
from West Main Street on Saturday and Sunday. Detours will be in place
to direct motorists to Ninth Street via Broad Street.

Beginning the week of April 2, the City will reduce traffic to one lane
in each direction on West Main Street from Ninth Street to Campus Drive
at Duke's East Campus. This phase of the waterline replacement will
limit access to businesses from West Main Street, which will require
customers to use alternative entrances to affected businesses. St.
Joseph's Episcopal Church, West Durham BP at Ninth Street, Whole Food
Market, and other businesses located in the Bull City Market Shopping
Center will not be accessible from the West Main Street entrance.

The West Main Street and Broad Street/Swift Avenue intersection will
remain open during this phase of the project. The waterline replacement
at the Broad Street intersection will be replaced during a nighttime
closure in late April. The City's contractor is working as quickly as
possible to limit disruptions to residents, businesses, and motorists.

Since the project began in February, work has been completed along West
Main Street from Rutherford Street to Ninth Street. Connections along
Iredell Street, South Buchanan Boulevard, and Perry Street will also be
replaced during the course of the project and will be completed by
September 2012.
