Durham County Library Hosts Soul and the American Imagination
A Bull City Soul Revival Event

Program: Soul and the American Imagination

Date: Tuesday, April 3

Time: 7 p.m.

About: Mark Anthony Neal, Professor of Black Popular Culture in the Department of African and African-American Studies at Duke University, will explore how soul music has become a soundtrack for the American imagination. Whether invoked throughout the 2008 presidential campaign, or referenced in 1980s nostalgia in films like The Big Chill, soul music has greatly influenced American culture. This program is part of Bull City Soul Revival, a collaborative initiative of musicians, scholars, historians and citizens, that explores and shares the rich history of the soul and R&B tradition in Durham in the 1960s and 1970s.

This project is made possible by funding from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. This project is also made possible by funding from Durham Library Foundation. For more information about the program, contact Carter Cue at 560-0270.

Durham County Library provides the entire community with books, services and other resources that inform, inspire learning, cultivate understanding and excite the imagination. For more information, visit your local library or visit us online at durhamcountylibrary.org.
