Durham Joins "Cans for Cash" Recycling Challenge

City of Durham Sponsors Citywide Recycling Challenge Through April 30;

Residents Can Register for a Chance to Win Prizes

DURHAM, N.C.- Durham residents eager for an easy way to win prizes, help
the environment, and support the City's recycling efforts should take
note of a new month-long contest designed to collect as many aluminum
cans as possible.

The City of Durham is joining the national "Cans for Cash" Recycling
Challenge that rewards top municipalities for environmentally-friendly
habits. According to Larrisha McGill, waste reduction coordinator with
the City's Solid Waste Management Department, "Cans for Cash" is a
national contest that will award nearly $100,000 to municipalities
competing in the recycling challenge. "Participating in this contest is
easy. Residents simply need to place their aluminum cans in their
curbside recycling cart. At the end of the month, we'll report on the
amount of cans collected and submit the results to compete for the cash
prize, which if we win, we'll use to help our local recycling efforts."

According to McGill, residents may also bring their aluminum cans to any
of the four locations listed below and register on-site for a chance to
win a Harris Teeter gift card along with a compost bin or a rain barrel.
The drop-off locations are:

About Aluminum Recycling

Recycling aluminum cans saves natural resources and energy as well as
helps the environment and the economy. Aluminum is a sustainable metal
and can be recycled over and over again. According to the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, 54 billion cans were recycled in 2003,
saving energy equivalent to 15 million barrels of crude oil, which is an
entire day's gas consumption for Americans. Each year, the aluminum
industry pays over $800 million for empty aluminum cans.
