Northeast Central Durham Residents Host Earth Day Events April 20

Events Planned for Eastway Elementary School, Humphrey Street, and Goose
Creek

DURHAM, N.C. - While the official celebration of Earth Day will take
place in downtown's Durham Central Park on April 22, the residents of
Northeast Central Durham will be getting an early treat with three
events designed to enhance open, green spaces in their community.

The City of Durham's Neighborhood Improvement Services Department, along
with residents participating in the Northeast Central Durham Livability
Initiative, have planned three events in honor of Earth Day for Friday,
April 20. These events are designed to engage Northeast Central Durham
residents in activities to increase awareness and appreciation of the
Earth's natural environment.

Students of Eastway Elementary School are getting another day full of
activities designed to create open, green spaces in Northeast Central
Durham. The school's "Green Day" will be held on Friday, April 20 from
8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 610 N. Alston Ave. Students, volunteers,
teachers, City staff, and neighborhood residents will participate in
activities that include classroom instruction on the ecological system.
This event is being coordinated by the department, which adopted Eastway
Elementary School as part of the Northeast Central Durham Livability
Initiative since one of the overarching goals is to create a
school/community garden. The initiative is a collaboration between the
department, Eastway Elementary School, the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), and North Carolina Central University (NCCU).

The second event is the Goose Creek Clean Up, which is being coordinated
by the department in partnership with the EPA, NCCU, and the Ecclesia
House of Prayer. Working together, a clean-up of Goose Creek along Elm
Street will take place on Friday, April 20 from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30
p.m. Participants are asked to meet at Golden Belt, located 807 E. Main
St., and then proceed as a group to the clean-up location.

The final event is the Humphrey Street Community Open Space
Beautification Project, which will continue with the second phase of its
development. During the first phase in November 2011, City staff and
community volunteers cleared the vacant lot across from the R. Kelly
Bryant, Jr. Pedestrian Bridge and planted trees, shrubs, and flowers. A
grant from Keep Durham Beautiful, Inc. and donations from the Durham
Garden Center will allow volunteers to plant more flowers, add two
benches, and add a fence at the back of the property. This event will
take place on Friday, April 20 from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
Participants are asked to meet at Golden Belt, located 807 E. Main St.,
and then proceed as a group to the event location at 1405 Humphrey St.
This event is being coordinated by the department in partnership with
the EPA, NCCU, and the Jesus' Word Church.

The Northeast Central Durham Livability Initiative directly supports
making Durham a place with thriving, livable neighborhoods as defined in
goal three of the City's new Strategic Plan. For additional information
or on-site assistance at any of these three events, contact Senior
Community Relations Coordinator Lynwood Best with the City's
Neighborhood Improvement Services Department, at (919) 560-1647, ext.
34254 or by email at Lynwood.Best at DurhamNC.gov.

About the Neighborhood Improvement Services Department

The City's Neighborhood Improvement Services Department works to
preserve and improve quality of life conditions for Durham residents,
and to encourage active participation in neighborhood redevelopment and
public policy and decision making dialogue. The department is
responsible for enforcement of quality of life ordinances and state
statutes including the City's Minimum Housing Code; Nonresidential Code;
Weedy Lot, Abandoned and Junk Vehicle ordinances; and the State of North
Carolina's Unsafe Building Statute. The department's rapid responders,
known as the Impact Team, remediate non-compliant housing properties;
abate public nuisances, such as litter, graffiti, illegal dumping, and
abandoned shopping carts; and conduct neighborhood service projects. The
department's Community Engagement staff provides outreach and education
to Durham residents and community organizations. Guided by the City's
Strategic Plan, the department helps ensure that Durham has thriving,
livable neighborhoods by providing the highest quality of services to
engage and educate the community, eradicate blight, ensure safer
neighborhoods, and enhance neighborhood revitalization. For more
