Durham County Library Hosts Discussion on the Qur'an

Program: Meet the Author: Dr. Carl W. Ernst
Date: Saturday, April 14
Time: 3 p.m.
Location: South Regional Library
                        4505 S. Alston Ave.
Cost: Free and open to the public

About: Dr. Carl W. Ernst, the William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will host a reading and discussion of his book How to Read the Qur'an. The reading takes place on Saturday, April 14 at 3 p.m. at South Regional Library, 4505 South Alston Ave. A book signing will follow.

Ernst offers a non-theological approach that treats the Qur'an as a historical text that unfolded over time, in dialogue with its audience, during the era of the Prophet Muhammad. He explores the history of the text and its development in the Meccan and Medinan periods; recent revisionist challenges to its textual integrity; and references in the Qur'an that relate to earlier works, such as the Bible. The book features Ernst's illuminating new translations of 725 Qur'anic verses and appendices with tools to help readers work their way through the entire text. How to Read the Qur'an not only summarizes historical and literary issues but also engages religious and political contexts essential to understanding the Qur'an today.
