About: Durham County Library will host Dr. Michael Hunt, the Everett H. Emerson Professor of History Emeritus at UNC Chapel Hill, for a reading and discussion of his book, Arc of Empire: America's Wars in Asia from the Philippines to Vietnam.

Hunt and coauthor Dr. Steven I. Levine propose that America's four wars in Asia were actually phases in a sustained U.S. bid for regional dominance. Devoting equal attention to Asian and American perspectives, the authors follow the long arc of conflict across 75 years, from the Philippines through Japan and Korea, to Vietnam, in order to trace American ambition, ascendance and ultimate defeat. In Arc of Empire, readers are encouraged to confront imperial patterns in U.S. history and are offered a deeper understanding of China's rise and Asia's place in today's world. Hunt will share his thoughts regarding how deeply these wars are etched in Asian politics and culture, as well as implications for today's Middle Eastern conflicts. The book is an alternate selection of the History Book Club and the Military Book Club.

The reading and discussion will take place on Saturday, May 19 at 3 p.m. at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St. A book signing will follow the reading. For more information on this program, call Joanne Abel at 919-560-0268.
