Durham County Library Hosts Comics Fest 2012

Durham, NC - Durham County Library will host the 2012 Comics Fest at Southwest Regional Library, 3605 Shannon Rd., on Saturday, May 19, from 12-5 p.m., and Sunday, May 20, from 2:30-6 p.m. This is the second year in a row that the library will host Comics Fest.

The program will feature events for people of all ages, including special guests, book signings, drawing workshops, activities, giveaways and prizes. Mark Crilley will lead a comics storytelling workshop on Saturday at 1 p.m. Crilley, author and artist of several series including Miki Falls, Brody's Ghost and the Akiko books, will perform live drawing demonstrations, read from his graphic novels and give advice to aspiring comic book creators about generating story ideas, giving characters distinctive voices, building conflict and jumping into the all-important rewrite.

"We're especially happy to have doubled our guests for children and young adults from last year's program, and to continue to set young readers on the path to writing and drawing their own comics," said Comics Fest organizer Amy Godfrey, Manager of Southwest Regional Library's Children's Unit. Godfrey also leads comics workshops at the library for children, whose work is posted periodically at http://dclcomics.wordpress.com.

Children ages 6-12 are encouraged to attend a workshop with Willow Dawson on Saturday at 3 p.m. Dawson, author and artist of Lila and Ecco's Do-It-Yourself Comics Club and No Girls Allowed, will lead participants in creating their own reality-based characters, which they will then use to generate story ideas. This presentation and workshop is designed to inspire reluctant readers and writers to harness the power of words and art.

Comics Fest will include two events for adults and young adults on Sunday: cartoonist Nate Powell at 2:30 p.m. and the panel discussion "Comics Go to College" at 4 p.m. Powell is the award-winning and best-selling author and illustrator of graphic novels Swallow Me Whole and Any Empire, and he's the artist behind The Silence of Our Friends (written by Jim Long and Mark Demonakos). Powell will be joined by Rob Clough, Durham-based comics critic for The Comics Journal, to discuss Powell's evolution as a cartoonist whose works include dreamlike explorations of mental health, meditations on politics and identity, and fictionalized narratives from the Civil Rights movement.

Powell is a winner of the Eisner and Ignatz awards, which Comics Fest co-organizer and librarian Patrick Holt describes as "the comics-equivalent of the Academy and Sundance awards." Holt, who writes Durham County Library's NextReads comics newsletter at https://durhamcountylibrary.org/readers, says that Powell's graphic novels "address topics that appeal to folks who might be hesitant to read a graphic novel. His talk and the 'Comics Go to College' panel discussion will appeal both to lifelong comics readers and to someone who's never even picked one up."

Sunday's panel discussion will address efforts by Duke University and UNC to give comics and graphic novels academic consideration from a number of perspectives. Ben Bolling, UNC English PhD candidate, hosts guests Will Hansen (Assistant Curator of Collections for Duke's Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library), Kirill Tolpygo (UNC's Librarian for Slavic and East European Resources) and Sara Appel (PhD candidate in Duke University's Literature Program).
This program was funded by the Friends of the Durham Library and is free and open to the public. For more information, please call 919-560-8590 or visit durhamcountylibrary.org/2012comicsfest.php.
