Durham County Library Hosts Discussion on North Carolina's Modernist Houses
Program: Mayberry Modernism
Date: Tuesday, June 12
Time: 7 p.m.
Location: Main Library
300 N. Roxboro St.
Cost: Free and open to the public
About: Durham County Library will host George Smart, founder of Triangle Modernist Houses, as he leads a discussion that explores the innovative design characteristics unique to modernist homes on Tuesday, June 12, at 7 p.m. at the Main Library. Smart will explain his concept of "Mayberry Modernism," sharing insights into how the Triangle is home to the third largest concentration of these houses in the country. The program will highlight some of the state's most noted modernist homes constructed during the 1950s - many still standing, some endangered, and some destroyed forever - and the community organization that has grown around this architectural movement.
One of North Carolina's secrets is that the Triangle follows only Los Angeles and Chicago in the number of such structures nationwide. Modernist designed homes are characterized by a merging of traditional features - like separate common areas - with more modern attributes, including open interior floor plans with vaulted ceilings, long exposed beams, extensive use of glass to bring in natural light and aesthetic geometric forms.
Smart grew up in Triangle architecture. His father was a Raleigh architect for more than 40 years who was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and others in the Modernist movement. Smart's mother made documentaries on architecture in the 1960s. Although Smart was not interested in architecture until 2007, he is now chair and founder of Triangle Modernist Archive, the largest digital archive for Modernist residential architecture in America. For his efforts, he received Preservation Durham<http://www.preservationdurham.org>'s Advocacy Award in 2011. Smart is also well known for as a narrator for the History Channel and as author of The Knights Templar Chronology. For more information, contact Joanne Abel at 919-560-0268.
Durham County Library provides the entire community with books, services and other resources that inform, inspire learning, cultivate understanding and excite the imagination. For more information, visit your local library or visit us online at durhamcountylibrary.org.
