New "City Hall This Week" Debuts Tonight

New Episode Begins Airing Friday, June 1 on DTV8 and

"On Demand" on City's YouTube Channel

DTV8's "City Hall This Week" will debut a new show tonight at 8 p.m.
Hosted by Senior Public Affairs Specialist Amy Blalock, this show will
feature the following highlights and other topics of interest. You can
also watch this new episode on demand at
http://www.YouTube.com/CityofDurhamNC.

Budget Public Hearing Scheduled for June 4

The City Council wants to hear from residents as it considers whether to
approve the administration's proposed 2012-2013 budget. A public hearing
will be held on June 4 to give anyone who wants to offer input on the
budget a chance to do so. The $372.7 million proposed spending plan
includes a property tax of one-cent per $100 of assessed property value
- an increase that would raise the annual taxes for the owner of a
$150,000 home by $15. A final vote on the budget is set for June 18.

Tickets Still Available for State of Durham's Economy Presentation

Tickets for the State of Durham's Economy breakfast are sold out, but
there are still some available for the presentation itself. The event
will be held at the Carolina Theatre on Wednesday, June 6 beginning at 8
a.m. Tickets can be bought on-site the morning of the program for $25
per ticket. The presentation will share news about Durham's economic
performance during 2011, as well as feature a panel discussion about
innovation, entrepreneurship, and the City's current business climate.

Durham's Homeless Population Increases from 2011

Durham's homeless population is up by 7 percent between January 2011 and
January 2012. Durham's annual point-in-time count was conducted on
January 25. This year's numbers show that 698 people were counted as
homeless throughout the community. Interim Community Development
Department Director Reginald Johnson breaks the numbers down further in
this episode of "City Hall This Week."

Changes Made for Solid Waste and Recycling Pick-up Schedule for Summer

The solid waste and recycling pick-up schedule will be changed for the
summer. Between June 4 and October 1, solid waste, yard waste,
recycling, and bulky items will be picked up earlier each day. This is
to help employees who work outside all day avoid the risk of
heat-related illnesses and injury. Residents are asked to place their
carts and bulky items on the curb the night before their normal pick-up
day since the crews may start collections as early as 6 a.m.

"We Care" Features Historic Geer Cemetery Clean Up

Durham's historic Geer Cemetery has undergone a transformation thanks to
the efforts of City employees, a local nonprofit, and Durham students.
The City's General Services Department, Keep Durham Beautiful, and
Voyager Academy High School recently teamed up to make a difference with
the largest one-day clean up ever of the historic cemetery.
