About: Long-time poet and storyteller, Beverly "Miz Bee" Fields Burnette, along with other members of the NC Association of Black Storytellers, will present a Juneteenth celebration of folktale narratives. This unique storytelling program for adults will be held on Saturday, June 23 at 3 p.m. at the Main Library.

As the oldest known celebration to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth dates back to June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas to proclaim the conclusion of the Civil War and free the enslaved. This news arrived two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued as an executive order by President Lincoln on January 1, 1863. Juneteenth was celebrated on June 16 this year.

Burnette, current President of the NC Association of Black Storytellers, has been published in several national poetry anthologies. In 2001 and 2003, she wrote poems for the National Public Radio/PRI program "A Season's Griot," and in 2003 read her own poem on this program. She is also well-known for teaching and telling folktales in the guise of Harlem Renaissance folklorist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston. In this encore appearance, Burnette will creatively combine cultural insights with storytelling and original and historical poetry.

Other featured storytellers include Madafo Lloyd Wilson, Joyce Grear and Maxwell Paige of Wilmington; Willa Brigham of Cary; Ella Joyce "EJ" Stewart and Arthuretta Martin of Raleigh; Sauuda Y. Eshé of Rocky Mount; Mardia Stepney and Renee Andrews of Winston Salem; Priscilla Best of Goldsboro; Mitch "Gran'daddy Junebug" Capel of Southern Pines; Roy "Poppa" Harris of Asheville; and Baba Jamal Koram, "the Storyman," of Alexandria, VA.

This program is sponsored by Durham Library Foundation. For more information contact Joanne Abel at 919-560-0268.
