City Council Approves $372.7 Million 2012-2013 Budget

Durham's 2012-2013 budget is now in place. The $372.7 million spending
plan approved by the City Council includes a property tax increase of
one-cent per $100 of assessed property value - an increase that would
raise the annual taxes for the owner of a $150,000 home by $15. The
additional money raised by the increase will go toward a dedicated fund
for affordable housing initiatives. The budget also includes a rate
increase for water, sewer, and stormwater customers, which goes into
effect on July 1.

Southside Redevelopment Takes Significant Step Forward

The Southside redevelopment project is ready to take a significant step
forward. The City Council approved several contracts that lay the
groundwork for construction to begin on Phase One of the project. Phase
One includes the development of 132 rental units on approximately seven
acres of the site. Interim Community Development Director Reginald
Johnson explains how some of the money the City is providing for the
project will be used in this episode of "City Hall This Week."

More Direction Given to Homelessness Initiative in Durham

The City and County's "Opening Doors in Durham to Prevent and End
Homelessness" initiative now has more direction. The City Council
approved an agreement with Durham County Government to further clarify
the responsibilities for the Homeless Services Advisory Committee. The
Committee provides leadership for the initiative and offers guidance to
the City Council and the Board of County Commissioners. The agreement
also spells out the joint and individual responsibilities of the City
and County regarding efforts to address homelessness. The City and
County are splitting the costs of implementing the agreement and the
Opening Doors initiative.

Efforts to Reduce and Prevent Gang Activity Will Continue in Durham

The City and County are continuing their efforts to reduce and prevent
gang activity in Durham. An agreement with Durham County Government will
allow for the continuation of the Gang Reduction Strategy. The strategy
continues funding for a gang reduction manager over the next year as
well as support for the Project BUILD program. The goal of the program
is to effectively increase the number of at-risk young people it serves.
