Durham County Library welcomes Dr. Katherine Mellen Charron, associate professor of History at North Carolina State University to discuss her latest book, Freedom's Teacher: The Life of Septima Clark. The book explores an educator's dedication to creating a citizenship school training initiative in the mid-1950's that enabled thousands of African-Americans to vote. This program will be held on Sunday, August 5 at 3 p.m. at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St. A book signing will follow the discussion.

Septima Poinsette Clark (1898-1987), a former public school teacher, developed a program that convinced African-Americans to register to vote and utilize the power of the ballot as a political catalyst. In Freedom's Teacher, Charron argues that Clark - along with other black women educators- embraced the challenge to make education a cornerstone of the twentieth-century freedom struggle. Charron's portrayal of Clark's life also examines southern black women's activism in national, state and judicial politics, from the Progressive Era to the civil rights movement and beyond.

Charron earned an M.A. in Afro-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Ph.D. in U.S. History from Yale University. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for the Study of the American South at UNC-Chapel Hill. She is also coeditor of William Henry Singleton's Recollections of My Slavery Days with David S. Cecelski. Freedom's Teacher: The Life of Septima Clark was recently awarded the Julia Cherry Spruill Prize for best monograph on Southern women's history from the Southern Association of Women Historians. The work also earned Charron the George C. Rogers Jr. Book Award from the South Carolina Historical Society.
