About: Durham County Library welcomes Dr. James Lewis, staff historian at the Forest History Society, for a discussion of his book The Greatest Good, and a showing of excerpts from the film of the same name. The program will take place on Monday, August 6 at 7 p.m. at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St., followed by a book and DVD signing.

The histories of the U.S. Forest Service and National Forests were penned by Lewis in The Greatest Good and later used as the foundation for a cinema documentary. The film, narrated by Charles Osgood, weaves historic footage and still photographs from interviews with historians, timber industry and environmental leaders, and Forest Service employees. The result is a comprehensive documentary that explores the past 100 years of accomplishments and controversies experienced while managing 191 million acres of America's land. The film seeks to address the complexities surrounding environmental issues while asking, "What is the greatest good?"

As staff historian of the Forest History Society in Durham, a nonprofit library and archive, Lewis devotes his time to the preservation and dissemination of forest and conservation history - the history of human interaction with forested lands. In addition to The Forest Service and the Greatest Good, Lewis has published numerous articles on a variety of topics in forest and conservation history. He also serves as editor of the Society's history magazine, Forest History Today, and its award-winning blog, "Peeling Back the Bark." Both may be found at www.Forest History.org.
