About: Durham County Library welcomes Dr. Freddie Parker, an internationally renowned scholar of Civil War and African-American history, as he leads a panel discussion of recent research findings on African-American soldiers during the Civil War. Other panelists include Eric Richardson, a North Carolina Central University History graduate who researched at the Museum of the Confederacy for a decade, and Teresa Roane, Archivist at The Museum of the Confederacy. The event will be held on Sunday, August 12 at 3 p.m. at Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St.

The discussion will feature historical accounts of thousands of African Americans serving in the Civil War as Confederate Army soldiers. Many arguments convey that these Confederates are "forgotten men" of this conflict, often freed men who fought willingly for the South, and identified themselves as Southerners. The concept of a single "black" narrative during the Civil War will be debated, as modern day historians are challenged by new theories that potentially could rewrite current Southern history.

Dr. Parker is interim and former chair of NCCU's History Department and has consulted and appeared on a number of media projects on the Civil War, including the BBC and PBS documentaries The Gospel Truth and Why Celebrate Juneteenth? Parker's expertise has earned him membership on the NC Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission and an appointment by Governor Bev Purdue to chair the state's African-American Heritage Commission.

Roane received a BA in History from Virginia Commonwealth University. Currently, she serves as library manager and archivist at The Museum of the Confederacy. Roane formerly served as Director of Archives and Photographic Services at Valentine Richmond History Center.
Richardson<http://www2.timesdispatch.com/news/2011/jun/24/tdmet01-michael-paul-williams-historically-black-c-ar-1129928/> holds an MA in History from North Carolina Central University. He held the Dr. James Howard Brewer Memorial Internship in Public History to process the Jefferson Davis Family Papers at the Eleanor Brockenbough Library at The Museum of the Confederacy. His research has also resulted in 10 interpretative stops in Alamance County, along the North Carolina Civil War Trails.
