feature the following highlights and other topics of interest. You can
also watch this new episode on demand at

City Council Approves Economic Incentive Agreement for New Downtown
Luxury Hotel

A significant redevelopment project is taking shape in downtown, and
some financial incentives from the City will help to make it happen. The
City Council approved an economic incentive agreement that will allow
the Hill Building to be turned into a 125-room luxury hotel. The
building is also known as the SunTrust building and is located in the
Parrish Street District of downtown. The project includes a capital
investment of $33.6 million on the part of the developer and a City
incentive of $5.7 million to be paid over 20 years. Office of Economic
and Workforce Development Director Kevin Dick explains the conditions of
the incentive package.

New Ambassador Team to Help Cleanup and Protect Downtown Image

A new Downtown Improvement District Clean and Safe Ambassador Team is
helping to bring a new level of cleanliness, safety, and hospitality to
downtown Durham. The 10-member team will be cleaning and maintaining
public spaces, welcoming and assisting visitors, connecting those in
need to social services, promoting downtown businesses, helping with
weed and graffiti removal, and much more. Downtown Durham Inc. President
Bill Kalkhof explains how this team is expected to further foster
downtown revitalization.

City Works to Improve Water Quality in Northeast Creek Watershed

The City is working to improve water quality in the Northeast Creek,
which flows into Jordan Lake and is listed on the State's impaired
waters list. The City Council approved a $250,000 contract for water
quality modeling. The modeling is needed to develop attainable goals and
cost-effective tools to meet state water quality standards in the creek.
These tools will be part of the overall watershed management and
improvement plan that is being developed for Northeast Creek.

Significant Advances Ahead for the Durham Emergency Communications
Center

The Durham Emergency Communications Center is taking an important step
forward in the way it processes information. While the Center already
uses the best technology available as it relates to 911 infrastructure,
recent advancements now make it possible for one provider to handle the
Center's needs. In addition to incorporating this infrastructure into a
hosted IP-based solution, the Center will now be able to process
photographs, audio files, and short videos from a caller's cell phone to
the 911 center. It will also be able to process web camera feeds from
banks activated during robberies. The City Council approved a five-year
$3.6 million contract to cover the cost of the service, which used to be
provided by multiple businesses.
