New Crime-Fighting Strategies Credited With Helping to Reduce Violent
Crime
Violent crime in Durham is going down, and City officials are crediting
new crime-fighting strategies adopted by the City, the County, and their
various law enforcement and community partners. Mayor William V. "Bill"
Bell and other City and County leaders developed the efforts as part of
their work on a Violent Crime Reduction Roundtable. Citywide, the number
of violent crimes fell from 489 in the March to June period of 2011 to
448 for the same period this year. Mayor Bell explains what strategies
are being used to reduce violent crime in Durham.
City Demonstrates Commitment to Helping Ex-Offenders Get Back on Their
Feet
The City held a free day-long seminar on July 26 to help ex-offenders
develop a strategic approach toward employment. The workshops covered
such topics as employability skills; resume preparation; how to dress
professionally for job interviews; transportation assistance; and
voicemail and email setup. The event was hosted by the Office of
Economic and Workforce Development and the Durham Workforce Development
Board.
Hillandale Golf Course Reopens for Business
Durham's oldest golf course is open once again for business. A grand
reopening event for the Hillandale Golf Course was held on August 2. The
100-year-old course had been closed for greens renovations and other
improvements. Hillandale's Director of Golf Operations Karl Kimball
explains what improvements were made and why they were needed.
Works of Art Unveiled at Bull City Connector Bus Shelters
Two of Durham's Bull City Connector bus shelters now offer more than
just a place to sit and wait for a bus - they are also works of art. In
order to enhance the Connector experience, pieces of unique art
reflecting the character of the surrounding area have been developed for
eight of the shelters. Artwork at the Oldham Towers and Durham County
Courthouse bus stops was unveiled on August 1. Durham Area Designers
President Steve Gaddis explains the inspiration behind each of the
pieces of work and why the project is important to Durham.
