New "City Hall This Week" Begins August 24

Violent and Property Crime Down; Raleigh Interconnection Water Project
Underway

 

DTV8's "City Hall This Week" will debut a new show tonight at 8 p.m. on
the City's YouTube channel at http://www.YouTube.com/CityofDurhamNC.
Since DTV8 will be off the air for maintenance from Friday, August 24 at
4 p.m. until Monday, August 27 at 8 a.m., the new episode will debut at
10 a.m. on Monday on Time Warner Cable channel 8. Hosted by Senior
Public Affairs Specialist Amy Blalock, this show will feature the
following highlights and other topics of interest. 

 

Violent and Property Crime Down in Durham

Both part one violent and property crimes are down by 5 percent during
the first six months of 2012. That's compared to the same time period
during 2011. According to the first and second quarter crime report, the
number of homicides, robberies, and aggravated assaults were not only
down, they were at a three-year low. Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez Sr.
explains the numbers further.

 

Durham City and County Continue Support of Efforts to Reign in
Backlogged Warrants

Durham City and County are continuing their support of a Central Warrant
Control Office. The goal of the office is to make sure that outstanding
and backlogged warrants are handled as efficiently as possible. The City
will pay half the operating costs of the Warrant Control Office at
$198,000. Eight full-time clerks and one full-time supervising clerk
work in the office. Their job is to record any new misdemeanor warrants
as well as entering the backlog of old warrants into the computer
system. In addition to the shared clerical costs of operating the
office, the City will also pay $298,000 for the salary and benefits of
four officers in the Warrant Squad Division.

 

Second Phase of Raleigh Interconnection Water Project Under Way

The second phase of the Raleigh Interconnection Water project is under
way. The project includes installing a water transmission main beginning
at the intersection of U.S. Highway 70 and Page Drive Extension and
ending near the intersection of T.W. Alexander Drive and U.S. Highway 70
in Wake County. This project is the second phase of the line
installation that connects Durham and Raleigh's water distribution
systems. It will allow each utility to access alternate sources of water
during droughts or other emergency events. The City Council approved a
$2.2 million contract for the construction of this phase of the project.
