John:  Thank you again for the opportunity to speak at the Inter-Neighborhood Council meeting on Tuesday night to discuss the “Watch for Me NC” pedestrian safety campaign.  As requested by the committee, I have attached a PDF of a presentation on Durham pedestrian crash trends (prepared by the UNC Highway Safety Research Center).  Please feel free to distribute this widely.  There are two things I want to point out about this data:  1.        The crashes analyzed are from 2003 to 2007. More recent data is available but has not been analyzed to the same degree (though, of course, the police, transportation staff, and NCDOT staff regularly monitor crash data).  2.       Population data in the presentation is from the 2000 census.  Thanks again for your interest in this issue.  ****  Dale McKeel, AICPBicycle & Pedestrian CoordinatorDepartment of TransportationCity of Durham/DCHC MPO101 City Hall Plaza, 4th FloorDurham, NC 27701P
