Labor Day - Unemployed Men and Women Have an Opportunity to Find a Job at Durham Rescue Mission's Third Thrift Store
Durham, NC - September 3, is Labor Day. Most people will enjoy a day off from work, but according to July's unadjusted unemployment rate for North Carolina, 9.6% of those who are eligible to work are unemployed. What does this mean for those who are homeless or recently paroled? For this population, finding work is even more difficult.
Ernie Mills, Co-Founder of Durham Rescue Missions, recently stated, "During my 44 years of ministry to the homeless, I have seen how difficult it is for recovered drug addicts, the homeless, and ex-prisoners to find jobs. Employers are reluctant to hire them because of potential problems. I felt it was imperative that our ministry think 'outside the box.' As the son of an alcoholic share cropper, I have learned when it seems there is no way to solve a problem, we must some way, somehow, find a way."
In these poor economic times, the Durham Rescue Mission is again searching for ways to help the unemployed find work. On Labor Day, the Durham Rescue Mission will be accepting applications as we look to fill 34 jobs at our third thrift store located at 3900 Chapel Hill Blvd, right across from Sam's Club. We will be accepting applications, not only from residents of the Durham Rescue Mission, but from the general public as well.
This store will be the Triangle's largest thrift store...30,000 square feet. Our other two thrift stores already provide jobs for 42 people.
During this difficult time, instead of cursing the economic darkness, the Durham Rescue Mission is finding ways to "light a candle" through creating social enterprises that will become a beacon of hope to some of the most vulnerable folks in our community.

Durham - Durham County Library's community read event, Durham Reads Together 2012, features the Judge Deborah Knott mystery series by North Carolina bestselling author, Margaret Maron. The kickoff event, Margaret Maron's North Carolina, will be held on Sunday, September 9, at the Main Library at 3 p.m. The author will read from her latest book in the series and sign copies of her books after the discussion. Main Library is located at 300 N. Roxboro St.
To participate in Durham Reads Together, the entire community is invited to read any or every title in the Judge Knott series, which is set in counties throughout North Carolina. The books explore the culture, history and challenges of the state, while at the same time spinning a popular tale of a young lawyer, the daughter of a former notorious bootlegger, who becomes a judge in a North Carolina county. Durham Reads Together will feature a month of programs, sponsored by Durham Library Foundation, that explore local food, race concerns, the history of bootlegging and land use issues in North Carolina, all through the lens of Maron's novels.
"This Durham Reads Together event is different from most one community/one book programs," Joanne Abel, Durham County Library adult programming coordinator said. "Instead of choosing one book and asking everyone to read the same thing, we've chosen to highlight the work of a North Carolina treasure, a bestselling author who writes novels with something for everyone: mystery, action, a little romance, local history and lots of culture. There are 17 books in the series, so everyone can find one that speaks to them. My favorite is the first, Bootlegger's Daughter."
Durham Reads Together participants and Maron fans will have many opportunities to meet the author and to discuss her books with others both online and in person. Programs include a meet up at Dos Perros Restaurant and a book discussion at the Casbah. Fans who want to participate online can visit the library's website and share their thoughts on discussion boards, or they can sign up to receive free e-newsletters from NoveList. The newsletters recommend similar mystery authors or highlight nonfiction titles that explore the topics in Maron's novels.
Fans can also meet Maron in person at a special Durham Library Foundation fundraiser brunch on Saturday, September 15 in a private home. The event, at $150 per person, will raise funds to support the library through the Foundation. All other Durham Reads Together events are free and open to the public.
Once again, Durham Reads Together will be an international event, as Durham's sister cities - Durham, UK; Arusha, Tanzania; Kostroma, Russia; Toyama, Japan; and Zhuzhou, China - participate in various ways as well.
The Durham Reads Together finale, a roast and toast of Maron by her writing group, will be held on Sunday, October 7 at 2:30 p.m. at the Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club.
This is the fourth Durham Reads Together project coordinated by Durham County Library. In 2005 the book featured was James McBride's The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother. In 2007 Durham Reads Together featured Darcy Frey's The Last Shot. The 2009 selection was Something for the Pain by Dr. Paul Austin.

Kick off Durham Reads Together with Margaret Maron as she discusses her Judge Deborah Knott mystery novels. Maron says that her novels "are the pegs on which I hang my love and concerns for North Carolina." While regional in location, the issues covered by these novels are universal. Maron will be signing her new book, Three-Day Town, and others in the series after the reading.
An Old Family Tradition: Bootlegging in North Carolina
Sunday, September 16, 3 p.m.

The first book in the Deborah Knott series, Bootlegger's Daughter, addresses the challenges faced by judicial candidate Knott when her father's bootlegging past becomes an issue. Join historian Todd Johnson for a look at the illegal liquor trade, from the Whiskey Rebellion to the present, including speeches and stories from personalities on both sides of the law. Racial inequality in the judicial system was the main factor that led Deborah Knott to run for judge, and North Carolina's complicated relationship with race is expertly woven into many of the Judge Knott novels. Join Dr. Sharon Holland, Associate Professor of English, African & African American Studies and Women's Studies at Duke University, for a discussion on how racial issues are explored in Maron's books.
