Two Local Universities and Target Help
Triangle Residents Prepare for Emergencies

RALEIGH - North Carolina Emergency Management is teaming up with the Wolfpack, Tar Heels and Target to help Triangle area families get ready for disasters. Gov. Perdue declared September as Emergency Preparedness Month to encourage families, businesses and schools to develop or update their emergency plans and kits.

"Last year, North Carolinians survived Hurricane Irene, the largest statewide tornado outbreak in recorded history and shockwaves from an earthquake in Virginia," said state Emergency Management Director Doug Hoell. "Having the necessary supplies and plans in place will help you fare better during a disaster and recover more quickly."

Hoell said the easiest, most economical way people can protect their families and businesses is to plan ahead, gather those supplies and discuss their emergency plans.

State emergency management staff will join mascots Mr. Wuf and Rameses this Friday, Sept. 21 at the Apex and Durham Target stores with information about what should be included in emergency kits. The team will be at the Super Target in Durham near the Streets of Southpoint from 2 to 3 p.m. and at the Super Target in Apex from 3 to 4 p.m.

"Target's participation in National Preparedness Month helps contribute to the safety and security of communities throughout the U.S.," said Brad Brekke, vice president, assets protection, Target. "Preparing communities and our business for disasters is a top priority for Target. The more guests and team members are prepared in advance of a disaster, the easier it is for communities to recover quickly."

Displays also will be set up in the Wolfpack Fan Zone during the N.C. State vs. Citadel game Sept. 22 and at Tar Heel Town during the UNC vs. Idaho game Sept. 29.
