About: Durham County Library will celebrate the freedom to read with its 4th Annual Banned Books Onstage. Actors from the Little Green Pig Theatrical Concern (LGPTC), under the direction of Marshall Botvinick, Jay O'Berski and Tony Perucci, will bring to life sections from banned books including the Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, James and the Giant Peach, East of Eden, Slaughterhouse Five, Bless Me Ultima, The Glass Castle, Push, Of Mice and Men and Animal Farm. Shirellette Ammons and Friends will provide accompanying music. The performance will take place on Saturday, October 6 at the Main Library at 3 p.m. Nationally, Banned Book Week is celebrated from Sep. 20-Oct. 6.

Banned Book Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Banned Book Week was started 30 years ago, and more than a thousand books have been challenged since that date. According to the American Library Association, there were 326 challenges reported to the Office of Intellectual Freedom in 2011.

This program is funded by Durham Library Foundation. For more information, contact Joanne Abel at 919-560-0268.
