Durham County Library Hosts Talk to Explore Anti-Muslim Prejudice

Program: Brown Bag Lunch with Professor Maleiha Malik

Date: Tuesday, October 23
Time: 12 noon
Location: Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St.
Cost: Free and open to the public

About: Durham County Library will host Maleiha Malik, Professor of Law at King's College, University of London, for a brown bag lunch presentation that explores anti-Muslim prejudice in Europe and the US. The event will take place on Tuesday, October 23 at 12 noon, at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St.

Malik argues that it is important to understand the long standing tropes that cause misunderstandings of present day manifestations of Islam amongst European and American Muslims. For example, not long ago, images of veiled Muslim women raised questions because they were a central part of orientalist discourse on Islam and the West. These prejudices are now recurring in debates about European and American Muslim women who wear the Islamic veil. Malik's discussion will also examine the political mobilization against European and American Muslims that has been systematically organized through links between US and European political actors and institutions.

Malik is the author of Discrimination Law: Theory and Context and Anti-Muslim Prejudice in the West - Past and Present. She studied law at the University of London and University of Oxford. She is a barrister and a member and fellow of the Honourable Society of Gray's Inn
This event is co-sponsored by the Duke Islamic Studies Center, British Council "Our Shared Future" and Duke-UNC Consortium for Middle East Studies. For more information, contact Dionne Greenlee at 919-560-0190.
