BBB Warns of
Email Scam Using LinkedIn Name
RALEIGH, N.C.
(October 18, 2012) —
Better Business Bureau serving Eastern North Carolina warns consumers to
beware of a new e-mail scam using LinkedIn’s name. BBB has been alerted that
numerous consumers have received these ‘phishing’ e-mails recently.
The
e-mail states that you have invitations from people who want to connect with
you and provides a link for you to click on to view your invitations.
The links provided do not include the LinkedIn.com domain
name, and BBB advises consumers to avoid clicking on any links
and to delete the e-mail immediately. The goal of ‘phishing’ e-mails is to
obtain enough personal information about you to steal your
identity.
BBB offers the
following advice to consumers who receive these e-mails:
Do not click on
any of the links or attachments provided. These links and attachments can
expose your computer to malware or other viruses.
Never reply to
the e-mail or provide any personal information.
Delete the
e-mail immediately.
Protect your
computer with anti-virus software and scan your computer frequently for
viruses.
If you do
receive an e-mail claiming to be from LinkedIn and are not sure if it is
legitimate, visit www.LinkedIn.com
directly.
Always use
caution when sharing personal information online, as it can be used to steal
your identity.
For additional
information, visit bbb.org.
