Durham Tap Water Places Third in Statewide Taste Test

DURHAM, N.C. - Durham is known for its long list of accolades, and now
tasty tap water can be added to the list. For the second time in the
last two years, tap water from the City of Durham has placed third in
the state in the "Best Tasting Tap Water" contest.

The contest featured 24 samples of tap water submitted by water
providers from across the state. An expert panel of five impartial
judges tasted water samples for about an hour before the results were
tallied, with Durham's tap water from the Wade G. Brown Water Treatment
Plant finishing in the top three and tying with the City of Asheboro for
third place.

Each year, the "Best Tasting Tap Water" contest is held in conjunction
with the annual fall conference of the North Carolina American Water
Works Association and Water Environment Association. This year's event
was held in Raleigh on November 13. This is the eighth time since the
event was initiated in 1985 that Durham has finished in the top three.
Durham's tap water won top honors in 1999 and 2006; previous finishes
were second place in 1985 and 1990; and third place in 1994, 1995, and
2010.

According to Water Management Department Director Don Greeley, the
statewide recognition further illustrates the commitment of the water
operations staff to provide clean, safe, and great-tasting water to the
residents and businesses that call Durham home. "We are excited to be
recognized again for providing great tasting and high quality drinking
water to our customers," Greeley said. "It is evident that our employees
take great pride in the job they do 24 hours as day, 7 days a week, to
ensure the quality and delivery of this precious and vital resource."
