Durham Fire Dept. Wants Residents to Keep Safety on the Front Burner
this Thanksgiving

Fire Safety Tips for the Holidays

For people who will be doing more cooking than usual during the
holidays, here are some important fire safety tips from the Durham Fire
Department. Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling food.
If simmering, baking, roasting or boiling food, check it regularly and
use a timer. Be alert. Keep anything that can catch fire away from the
stovetop. Make sure sleeves are out of the way when cooking. Have a
"kid-free" zone of at least three feet around the stove and areas where
hot food is prepared or carried. Turn the handles of pots and pans on
the stove inward to avoid accidents. For more information about fire
safety and prevention, visit
http://DurhamNC.gov/Pages/NNDetails.aspx?detailId=303.
