City Responds to Questions Concerning the Addition of Fluoride to the
Drinking Water

Durham's Water Management Department is addressing questions that have
come up recently regarding the necessity and safety of adding fluoride
to the City's drinking water. The addition of fluoride to a water supply
is strictly regulated at both the state and federal levels to avoid
unwanted health effects from too much fluoride. It is also still
strongly supported by the N.C. Division of Public Health, the Centers
for Disease Control, and other medical organizations. Water Management
Assistant Director Vicki Westbrook explains how and why fluoride is
added to Durham's drinking water.

Process of Filling Ward 3 City Council Seat is Underway

The City Council is now well into the process of finding a new Ward 3
representative to replace Councilman Mike Woodard. Woodard resigned from
the City Council after winning election to the North Carolina Senate in
November. He will officially leave City office on December 31. The
deadline for applying to fill the vacancy was November 30. The City
Council will fill the seat no later than January 22.

High School Students Learn About Entering the Workforce through the
Durham Teen Center

Dozens of Southern High School students now know more about how to get a
job, thanks to the many services offered through the Durham Teen Center.
The students recently took part in a day of activities at the center
geared toward helping them begin the process of entering the workforce.
They also learned more about what the Durham Teen Center has to offer.
Senior Community Relations Coordinator for the Office on Youth Evelyn
Scott explains more about what the students got to do during their day
at the Durham Teen Center.

More Safe Places to Play Are Coming to Durham

The City and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina are joining
forces to bring more safe places to play to Durham. Kids will soon be
able to have fun, while getting physically fit - directly in the street.
Durham City and County and Blue Cross have been selected to receive a
$50,000 grant to create Play Streets. These are roads that are closed to
traffic and opened to the community to encourage physical activity,
especially in neighborhoods that lack open space. Play Streets will be
held in different areas of Durham over the coming months. Details about
the locations and dates of these events will be posted at
http://ahealthieramerica.org/play-streets/.
