New "City Hall This Week" Begins December 7
Crime Report Offers Encouraging News; Police Officers Recognized with
Promotions

Third Quarter Crime Report Offers Encouraging News
The Durham Police Department's Third Quarter Crime Report is offering
some encouraging news. Violent crime, which includes homicide, rape,
robbery and aggravated assault, dropped three percent during the first
nine months of the year. Property crime, which includes burglary,
larceny and motor vehicle theft, was down by eight percent over the
first nine months of the year compared to the same period last year.
Police Chief Jose Lopez, Sr. explains more about some of the specific
programs that have helped address crime in Durham.
Durham Community Land Trustees to Oversee Southside Rental Properties
The City Council approved Durham Community Land Trustees to serve as the
project developer for nine rental properties that are part of the
Southside Revitalization project. The properties include three duplexes
and six single-family homes for a total of 12 units located on East
Piedmont Avenue. Durham Community Land Trustees will renovate and manage
the units as affordable rental housing. Construction on the $1.6 million
project is expected to begin next summer.
City Continues Public Outreach Effort on Plans for Former Duke Diet and
Fitness Center
The City is continuing its efforts to get as much public feedback as
possible on plans for the future of the former Duke Diet and Fitness
Center. Durham is considering whether to turn the property into a
stormwater retrofit project. Civil Engineer Sandra Wilbur answers some
of the most commonly asked questions surrounding the project.
Police Officers Earn Promotions
The Durham Police Department has now officially recognized 36 of its
members for promotions within the last year. A ceremony was held on
December 6 for officers to receive a badge reflecting their new rank.
Among those promoted were one deputy chief; two assistant chiefs; four
captains; six lieutenants; 12 sergeants; 10 corporals; and one civilian
crime scene specialist.
