Habitat for Humanity Milestone

DTV8's "City Hall This Week" will debut a new show tonight at 8 p.m.
Hosted by Senior Public Affairs Specialist Amy Blalock, this show will
feature the following highlights and other topics of interest. You can
also watch this new episode on demand at
http://www.YouTube.com/CityofDurhamNC.

Durham Residents Learn How to "Alarm for Life"

The Durham Fire Department is showing City residents how to alarm
themselves for life. Firefighters went door to door on January 4 along
Davidson Avenue and four neighboring streets making smoke alarms and
batteries available to residents who can't provide alarms on their own.
Sierra Jackson, public education coordinator for the Durham Fire
Department, explains why the program was conducted specifically in those
neighborhoods and how any resident can request a complimentary fire
safety home consultation.

City to Hold E-Waste Recycling Event

The City will hold an e-waste, paper shredding and Christmas tree
recycling event on Saturday, January 26 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the
Durham County Memorial Stadium. Nearly all electronic devices with a
cord can be disposed of at the event - except for large appliances,
refrigerators, air conditioners or any other appliance that contains
Freon. Christmas trees will also be accepted at the event. For more
information, contact Durham One Call at (919) 560-1200.

City Employees Reach Another Milestone in Support of Habitat for
Humanity

City of Durham employees have reached another milestone in their support
of Habitat for Humanity. They have been volunteering and raising funds
for the King family home, which was dedicated on December 22 on North
Maple Street. In addition to filling more than 100 volunteer shifts,
employees also raised more than $5,500 to purchase building materials
for the house. The fundraising effort proved to be a first for the City
in terms of its Habitat partnerships. J.J. Scott, business services
manager for the Public Works Department, explains what made this project
so interesting and why City employees aren't slowing down in their
efforts on behalf of Habitat for Humanity anytime soon.

New Civil Rights Mural Coming Soon to Main Street

People walking along Durham's West Main Street will soon be enjoying a
new civil rights mural. The project is being made possible by a grant
from the City's Public Art Initiative Pilot program to renowned artist
Brenda Miller Holmes. The mural will be located on the eastern exterior
wall of a building located at 112 West Main Street. It will commemorate
the history of the Civil Rights Movement in Durham and will include the
participation of about 15 young people and 15 adults.
