Durham's Continuum of Care Providers Win HUD Funding

Renewal Funding to Support Nine Housing Programs for Homeless People

DURHAM, N.C. - Nine of Durham's homeless housing programs will be able
to continue operating this year thanks to the U.S. Department of Housing
and Urban Development (HUD)'s renewal of grant funding from HUD's
Continuum of Care Program.

The City's Community Development Department has been notified that HUD
has awarded a total of $692,330 to nine programs within Durham's
Continuum of Care with renewed funding to continue their efforts to help
house homeless people in Durham. The grants were awarded competitively
to these Durham projects to meet the needs of their homeless clients and
will help fund transitional and permanent housing for homeless persons
and families.

The following organizations and programs received renewal funding:

* Housing for New Hope's Andover I and II Apartments (permanent
supportive housing for individuals): $50,284

* Housing for New Hope's Community Supportive Housing Program
(permanent supportive housing for individuals): $67,152

* Genesis Home's Family Matters Program (transitional housing
for families): $178,332

* Durham Housing Authority's Home Again Program (permanent
supportive housing for individuals and families): $97,845

* Housing for New Hope's Phoenix and Dove Houses (transitional
housing for single adults in recovery from addictions): $131,313

* Housing for New Hope's Streets to Home Initiative (permanent
supportive housing for chronically homeless individuals and families
):$116,096

* Housing for New Hope's William Square I and II Apartments
(permanent supportive housing for homeless individuals with disabling
conditions): $51,308

According to Reginald J. Johnson, director of the City's Community
Development Department, HUD awarded this funding again to ensure these
housing and service programs remain operating in 2013 since they are a
critical part of the Obama Administration's strategic plan to prevent
and end homelessness in America. "These awards enable several of our
public and nonprofit housing providers to continue to operate some 61
beds of transitional housing for homeless families and over 80 beds of
permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless people with
disabilities," Johnson said. "We remain grateful that the federal
government continues to partner with Durham to address homelessness and
that our community has these wonderful organizations to help homeless
people get back into housing."

HUD awarded $1.54 billion to renew funding to more than 7,000 local
homeless programs operating across the country. HUD is renewing funding
through its Continuum of Care programs to existing local programs as
quickly as possible to prevent any interruption in federal assistance
and will award funds to new projects in early 2013. This year, HUD
challenged local communities to reexamine their response to homelessness
and give greater weight to proven strategies, from providing 'rapid
re-housing' for homeless families to permanent supportive housing for
those experiencing chronic homelessness.
