Durham's Continuum of Care Providers Win HUD Funding

Renewal Funding to Support Two Housing Programs for Homeless People

DURHAM, N.C. - Two of Durham's housing programs for formerly homeless
people will be able to continue operating this year thanks to the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)'s renewal of grant
funding from HUD's Continuum of Care Program.

The City's Community Development Department was notified yesterday that
HUD has awarded $59,977 to Genesis Home's Turning Point program and
$25,917 to Housing for New Hope's Sherwood Park project. The Turning
Point project provides housing and services support for five formerly
homeless families headed by an adult with a disability. The Sherwood
Park project offers permanent supportive housing for 20 single formerly
homeless adults whose income is less than 30 percent of the area median
income.

In announcing yesterday more than 500 grants totaling over $72 million
to local homeless housing and service programs across the nation, HUD
Secretary Shaun Donovan said, "We know these modest investments in
housing and serving our homeless neighbors not only saves money, but
saves lives. These local programs are on the front lines of the Obama
Administration's efforts to prevent and end homelessness as we know it
once and for all."

Thus far this year, HUD has awarded $778,224 to 11 programs within
Durham's Continuum of Care to continue to provide transitional housing
to homeless people and permanent supportive housing for formerly
homeless people. HUD will make a third round of funding to support
selected new Continuum of Care projects later this year.
