Durham Hosts Bicycle and Pedestrian Design Meeting April 9

Study to Consider Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities Along Cornwallis and
Carpenter-Fletcher Roads

DURHAM, N.C. - Those who frequently use Cornwallis and
Carpenter-Fletcher roads should mark their calendars now to attend next
week's public information meeting about the City of Durham's bicycle and
pedestrian facilities study of these two major roadways.

The City of Durham is preparing functional design studies for bicycle
and pedestrian facilities along Carpenter-Fletcher Road from Woodcroft
Parkway to Alston Avenue as well as Cornwallis Road from South Roxboro
Street to Chapel Hill Road.

A public information meeting to describe the design process and allow
residents to provide input has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 9, 2013
at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria at Rogers-Herr Middle School, located at 911
W. Cornwallis Road.

The City's Public Works Department has hired Horvath Associates to
prepare this study for the following four roadway corridors: Morreene
Road from Erwin Road to Neal Road; Carpenter-Fletcher Road from
Woodcroft Parkway to Alston Avenue; Cornwallis Road from South Roxboro
Street to Chapel Hill Road; and Hillandale Road from I-85 to NC-147.
Additional public information meetings are being planned for later this
spring for the two other corridors in the study - Morreene Road from
Erwin Road to Neal Road as well as Hillandale Road from I-85 to NC-147.

Both the DurhamWalks! Pedestrian Plan and the Durham Comprehensive
Bicycle Transportation Plan call for pedestrian and bicycle improvements
to these four corridors. This project does not include road widening to
expand the traffic capacity of the corridors or the intersections within
the corridors. This is a planning project only and no construction
activity is currently associated with this study. The results of this
study may result in recommendations for the construction of sidewalks
and bicycle lanes.

bicycle and pedestrian facilities, visit
