Hosted by Senior Public Affairs Specialist Amy Blalock, this show will
feature the following highlights and other topics of interest. You can

Durham Updates City Code Regulating Dangerous Weapons

Durham's city code regulating the discharge and possession of dangerous
weapons has been updated. The City Council approved the changes because
some of the previous regulations conflicted with state law, making them
unenforceable. At the same time, some authority to regulate firearms and
other dangerous weapons within the city was not being recognized. City
Attorney Patrick Baker explains more about why the changes were needed.

City Council Adopts 2013-2014 Budget Guidelines

The City administration now has guidelines in place to serve as a
blueprint for the development of the 2013-2014 budget. Because the
City's revenue is only projected to grow slightly next year, the City
Council says increases in spending must continue to be limited. Through
the guidelines, the Council is directing the City Manager to develop a
budget that limits increases to what is needed to accommodate population
growth and cost factors. It also clearly identifies funding requirements
driven by state and federal mandates and major city initiatives that
support Durham's Strategic Plan.

City Council Provides Financial Support for Redevelopment of Whitted
School

As part of the Southside revitalization effort, the City is doing its
part to help redevelop the Whitted School. The County is repurposing the
building so that it will provide both affordable senior housing and a
pre-kindergarten facility. To help with that effort, the City will
provide $500,000 in construction and permanent financing at an interest
rate not exceeding 2 percent. The building is expected to open sometime
in 2015.

City Accepting Applications for Durham Youth Commission

Youth who want a voice in their City's government are invited to apply
to serve on next year's Durham Youth Commission. The commission is open
to 9th-12th graders, and members commit to serve a one-year term. Senior
Community Relations Coordinator with the City's Office on Youth,
explains how the Commission helps develop leadership skills as well as
represent Durham's young people in local government.
