New “City Hall This Week” Begins July 12
Next Generation 9-1-1 Now in Durham; Small Local Business Enterprise Program Seeks Applicants

DTV8’s “City Hall This Week” will debut a new show tonight at 8 p.m. Hosted by Senior Public Affairs Specialist Amy Blalock, this show will feature the following highlights and other topics of interest. You can also watch this new episode on demand at http://www.YouTube.com/CityofDurhamNC.

Installation of Next Generation 9-1-1 System Complete
Durham is continuing to set the standard for the state and the nation when it comes to emergency communications. Now that installation is complete, the Durham Emergency Communications Center is one of the few next generation 9-1-1 systems in the country. Durham Emergency Communications Center Director James Soukup explains how the system works and why it will enable the center to respond to the changing needs of a wireless, mobile community.

Final Professional Placement Network Academy Workshop to Be Held July 18
Professionals looking for work have one last opportunity to participate in Durham’s professional placement network academy’s workshop series. The final workshop of the 2012-2013 series will be held on Thursday, July 18 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Spring Hill Suites. The topic will be how to create a financial plan in today’s economy. The 2013-2014 series is expected to begin in September with events held on the third Thursday of every month.

Small Local Business Enterprise Program Now Accepting Applications
There’s a new way of being awarded work with the City for small businesses in Durham, Chatham, Orange, and Person counties. Small business owners can now apply for certification through the new Small Local Business Enterprise Program. The program is focused on small businesses that specialize in construction, architectural, engineering, and surveying services. The program is for construction contracts of up to $500,000, as well as professional services contracts of up to $100,000.

Durham Receives National Recognition for the Let’s Move! Initiative
Durham is receiving national recognition for its commitment to the key health and wellness goals that are part of the “Let’s Move! Cities, Towns, and Counties Initiative.” The program was started by First Lady Michelle Obama. Its goal is to solve the childhood obesity epidemic within a generation. Four medals were awarded to Durham for action taken to improve access to healthy, affordable food and for increased opportunities for physical activity.
