Durham Police Department Releases Second Quarter Crime Report
The Police Department's Second Quarter Crime Report is offering encouraging news. It shows that Part One Index Crime was at a 15-year low for the first six months of 2013. Part One Index Crimes are the total of property and violent crimes. Violent crime was at its lowest rate since 2005, and overall property crime and larcenies are at 15-year lows. Chief Jose Lopez Sr. offers more details about the crime report.

Fourth Quarter Financial Report Shows Responsible Management of City Resources
The City's Fourth Quarter Financial Report has been released for 2012-2013. It shows that despite the challenging economic climate, all departments finished the year within budget - spending $5.5 million less than expected. Of that, personnel costs saved $2.4 million and savings in operating and other costs accounted for $3.1 million.

Durham County Board of Health Stands behind Fluoride Recommendation
The Durham County Board of Health is standing behind its long-time recommendation that fluoride be added to the City's water supply. That recommendation comes after months of study by the board and an ad hoc committee set up to gather information about the pros and cons of fluoridation. As a result of the study, the board found that the minimal risks associated with fluoridation are primarily cosmetic in nature. They also agreed that adding fluoride to public drinking water remains an effective way of preventing tooth decay and of promoting good oral health.

Durham Bulls to Continue Operation of Durham Athletic Park
The Durham Bulls Baseball Club will continue to operate the Durham Athletic Park (DAP) on behalf of the City for another year. The Bulls took over operations of the DAP in January 2012. The Club's $73,000 contract with the City has been extended through next year. The facility is used for a number of baseball events, including college baseball as well as hosting various corporate events and festivals.
