New "City Hall This Week" Begins October 4
Progress Made on Failed & Struggling Developments; New Medicine Drop Boxes Installed

DTV8's "City Hall This Week" will debut a new show tonight at 8 p.m. Hosted by Senior Public Affairs Specialist Amy Blalock, this show will feature the following highlights and other topics of interest. You can also watch this new episode on demand at http://www.YouTube.com/CityofDurhamNC.

Public School Test Scores Expected to Drop for Last Year
Durham Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Eric Becoats is preparing everyone - including members of the City Council - for the predicted drop in test scores from this past year. Becoats made a presentation to the Council during its September 19 meeting. He says that while there are many good things happening in the schools, last year's changes to the state's curriculum will mean lower test scores initially. The schools are receiving the test results later than normal because of those changes.

Progress Continues to be Made on Failed and Struggling Developments
The City is continuing its efforts to address the various neighborhoods that are being overseen by the Failed and Struggling Development Program. The program was established to try and deal with situations where developers are no longer able to sustain developments and have been forced to close their businesses or restructure their companies. Three subdivisions currently fall under the struggling development category. Nine subdivisions are categorized as failed developments. In both cases, the Public Works Department is working through available options to make sure the developments are completed.

Police Department Installs New Medicine Drop Boxes
The Durham Police Department is making easier to dispose of old prescriptions and medications. There are two new drop-off locations, which are in addition to the existing one at police headquarters. The new ones are located at the District Two Substation and the District Three Substation. Properly disposing of old prescriptions helps to prevent accidental poisonings, drug abuse, and water pollution.
