Durham Offers Another Session for Free Telecommunications Job Training
Second Application & Interview Session Set for December 17

DURHAM, N.C. - Due to significant interest in the City of Durham's Telecommunications Job Training Program, a second informational meeting has been scheduled for early next week.

Administered by the N.C. Institute for Minority Economic Development (NCIMED), Durham Career Center System, and the City's Office of Economic and Workforce Development, the 16-week free training program will teach the skills needed to secure full-time employment in the broadband telecommunications industry. Participants will learn how to install and troubleshoot cable, telephone and Internet services; practice equipment testing using the appropriate tools; and study industry standards and customer service.

Residents interested in speaking with staff about this training program are invited to a final application and interview session on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Durham Career Center (formerly Durham Job Link Career Center), 1105 South Briggs Avenue, Durham.  More than 60 residents attended the December 11th informational meeting, prompting City staff to hold an additional session next week.

Participants accepted into the program will be enrolled in the 112-hour Time Warner Broadband Technician Training Program and the Human Resource Development Program at Durham Technical Community College. This no-cost training will also provide preparation that allows participants to qualify as entry-level technicians for employment in the broadband telecommunications in both cable television or telecommunications.

The deadline to apply for the job training program is January 8, 2014. The program will then begin the week of January 13, 2014. The training is being provided through a grant secured by the City's Office of Economic and Workforce Development from the N.C. Department of Commerce's Division of Workforce Solutions.
