Durham's Creek Week Offers Wastewater Plant Tours, Cleanups & Nature Activities

DURHAM, N.C. - Durham residents interested in learning more about local water resources should mark their calendars now to attend a Creek Week event the week of March 15-22, 2014.

Activities are planned to help clean up creeks, educate about pollution issues facing local streams and lakes, and guide people to encounter nature along waterways. New this year, weekday tours of wastewater treatment plants will offer participants a glimpse into "reclaiming" the water flushed down toilets and washed down sink and shower drains. The reclaimed water is released into local creeks, mixing with stormwater runoff that washes directly into creeks without any cleaning.

"With all of the news about dangerous chemicals spilling into our rivers, it's more important than ever that we all learn the everyday things we can do for clean water," said Laura Webb Smith, public education coordinator for the Stormwater and GIS Services Division of the City's Public Works Department. "Creek Week offers concrete ways to get involved in protecting our water resources."

Creek Week events include a rain garden workshop, environmental education programs for kids and adults, canoe rides, nature walks, and volunteer opportunities.
