More than 150 community leaders from a variety of disciplines came together in November 2014 to begin to collaboratively address the challenges faced by Durham's young men of color as they attempt to make a successful life. Among the outcomes from the Community Summit was the idea to host a related Youth Summit to hear directly from the young people who will be affected by the My Brother's Keeper Initiative that was launched by President Barack Obama in early 2014 and began in Durham in late 2014.Boys of color, ages 11-21, are invited to attend the upcoming Youth Summit, from 9:45 a.m. - 1 p.m., on Saturday, January 24, 2015. The free event will offer attendees food, music and door prizes. Feedback from the youth will focus on four topic areas: Educational Attainment, Job Training and Placement, Court Involvement, and Health. The keynote speaker will be Mike Rae Anderson of Polished Souls Foundation, Inc. Anderson is the chief executive officer and founder of Polished Souls Foundation, Inc, which is a non-profit organization based in The Triangle Area of North Carolina that aims to empower and mentor adjudicated youth. To register for the event, email the youth's name and age to mybrotherskeeper at dconc.gov or visit mbkdurham.info and register online.
