RTI International Releases Durham Police Department Traffic Stop Study Findings
RTI International has released its findings of a Durham Police Department traffic stop study<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtYTzRUTvmQ&feature=youtu.be>. The study was conducted at the department's request to determine whether there was racial disproportionality in traffic stops. RTI and Interim Police Chief Larry Smith address the study's findings<http://durhamnc.gov/DocumentCenter/View/9610>.

Police Officers Take Part in Verbal De-Escalation Training
Nearly all officers in the Durham Police Department have taken part in verbal de-escalation training, which is one of the department's recent efforts toward improvement. Former Raleigh Police Chief Harry Dolan conducted the training and explains verbal de-escalation and when it's used.

More Progress on Southside Revitalization Efforts
More progress is being made on the Southside revitalization efforts. The City Council approved using up to $4.4 million on site preparation and infrastructure improvements<http://www.durhamnc.gov/agendas_new/2016/cma20160321/10986_MEMO_SOUTHSIDE_EAST_PHASE_II_384674_682358.PDF> for the second phase of development for the Lofts at Southside. The second phase will consist of 85 mixed-income rental units with 58 of the units being made available to low-income individuals or families.


Additional Affordable Housing to be Built in North Durham
More affordable housing will be built in north Durham. The Durham Housing Authority is issuing nearly $20,000 in tax-exempt multifamily housing bonds to help fund the Briar Green Apartments<http://www.durhamnc.gov/agendas_new/2016/cma20160321/10982_MEMO_APPROVAL_OF_A_MULTIFAMILY_385181_681771.PDF>. The project will be located at 500 Danube Lane and will include 200 new apartments, all of which will made affordable to people with incomes at or below 60 percent of the area median income.
