Durham Continuum of Care Providers Win Additional HUD Funding to Help Homeless

Organizations Interested in Upcoming Grant Opportunities Invited to May 25 Meeting

DURHAM, N.C. - Durham projects serving the needs of people without homes have just received more than $350,000 in federal grant funding.

The City of Durham's Community Development Department has been notified that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded Alliance Behavioral Healthcare $157,168 to fund continuing operations of DASH, a project that provides permanent supportive housing to 12 formerly homeless households. Urban Ministries of Durham also received a grant of $196,319 for Fresh Start, a new rapid rehousing project designed to provide housing assistance to 20 single adults who were chronically homeless prior to being accepted into the project.

With 12 HUD grants awarded<http://nc-durham.civicplus.com/DocumentCenter/View/9555> in early March 2016, Durham will be receiving a total of $1,322,432 through the 2015 HUD Continuum of Care (CoC) Homeless Grants Competition, the largest amount of CoC funding Durham has received in any single year. Since first receiving CoC funding in 1998, the Durham community has received a cumulative total of $21,091,152 in federal funds to help support local programs addressing the housing and service needs of people without homes.

"HUD has made winning Continuum of Care grants more competitive than ever, and it is a tribute to the fine work of many organizations throughout the Durham community that we have been awarded the most money we have ever received," said Reginald J. Johnson, director of the City's Community Development Department. "We are committed to continuing to work with our partners to open a door to a home for every person experiencing homelessness in this community."

Organizations who may be interested in applying for Durham Continuum of Care grants in the upcoming 2016 Homeless Grants Competition are encouraged to attend the next meeting of the Durham Continuum of Care, scheduled for Wednesday, May 25 at 3 p.m. in the Durham County Human Services Building, or contact Matthew Schnars<mailto:matthew.schnars at durhamnc.gov> or Lloyd Schmeidler<mailto:lloyd.schmeidler at durhamnc.gov> in the City's Community Development Department at (919) 560-4570.
