New Police Chief Sworn In During Public Ceremony
The City of Durham's new police chief is already hard at work. Chief Cerelyn Davis was sworn in during a departmental ceremony on June 6 and then during a public ceremony<http://durhamnc.gov/DocumentCenter/View/10789> at The Carolina Theatre on June 10. She says her most immediate priorities are to address violent crime in the city and to work to enhance the community's trust in the police department.

City Celebrates Southside Milestones
The City is celebrating two milestones<http://durhamnc.gov/DocumentCenter/View/10774> in the revitalization of the Southside neighborhood. A ribbon-cutting event for Phase I of the Lofts at Southside and a groundbreaking ceremony for Phase II were held on June 9. Mayor William V. "Bill" Bell explains why the new apartments help to support the goal of thriving and livable neighborhoods in Durham.

Solid Waste Collection Operates on Summer Schedule
>From now until October 3, all solid waste, yard waste, recycling and bulky items will be collected earlier each day<http://durhamnc.gov/DocumentCenter/View/10690>. Residents are asked to place carts and bulky items on the curb the night before their normal pickup day since collections will begin at 6 a.m. to help employees who work outside all day avoid the risk of heat-related illness and injury.
