Public Hearing on Proposed Golden Belt Local Historic District September 6
Residents and stakeholders will have a chance to weigh in on proposed plans for a Golden Belt Local Historic District<http://cityordinances.durhamnc.gov/OnBaseAgendaOnline/Documents/ViewDocument/WS-Published%20Attachment%20-%2011276%20-%20MEMO-(CORRECTED)%20-%20GOLDEN%20BELT%20LOCAL%20HISTORIC.pdf?meetingId=123&documentType=Agenda&itemId=832&publishId=2772&isSection=false> on September 6. The historic district designation is a type of zoning that is applied to an area of special historic, architectural and/or cultural significance. The zoning requires that property owners or residents get a Certificate of Appropriateness before making any exterior changes to their property.
Traveling by Bicycle Now Safer Along Watts Street
Traveling by bicycle is now safer along Watts Street. The City's Transportation Department has installed new pavement markings to create a contra-flow bicycle lane<http://durhamnc.gov/DocumentCenter/View/11588> between West Trinity Avenue and Lamond Avenue. The lane will allow bicyclists to travel southbound on Watts Street while continuing to restrict southbound travel for motor vehicles.
Tire Recycling Drive Reduces Places for Mosquitoes to Flourish
Mosquitoes and the diseases they carry have fewer places to flourish in Durham thanks to residents who recycled more than 19,000 pounds of old tires last month<http://keepdurhambeautiful.org/2016/08/durham-recycles-over-19000-lbs-of-tires-to-help-prevent-zika-virus/>. Residents who missed the event can drop off up to five tires for free at the City's Waste Disposal and Recycling Center.
