They haven't updated the numbers for yesterday, but there were 93,000 votes cast by Wednesday night (out of about 210,000 registered voters).

Some folks are saying they've voted for years, and suddenly are no longer on the books (even if they are 99% right in correcting things, 1% of the people will experience mistakes and 1% of a big number is still significant). You can check your status with the voter look-up tool at http://www.ncsbe.gov/Voter-Tools.

If you check your registration status, you might be

  * Registered in Durham County (good)
  * Inactive (you didn't send in a card you were supposed to) -- Go vote early or on Election Day. You'll just have to sign that you are where you think you are (think of it doing it in person rather than sending in the stupid form)
  * Need ID (this is HAVA ID, or proof of residency) -- bring something that connects you to your address, like your driver's license or car registration, utility bill, pay or bank statement, or government something. It can be on your phone. I think the county is misreading the federal law on what kind of ID you need, but just bring what they said.
  * Removed -- For various reasons, some of them good. You can register and vote at one-stop if this has happened to you. Bring your proof of residency. You may have heard news stories on this.
  * Registered but not in Durham County -- You need to get in to Early Voting to re-register in Durham County.
  * Not there -- NC and VA had a contest on registering voters, so folks who sent in a registration may not have gotten in. Also DMV and BOE systems don't always talk, so the update you thought you did didn't go through. Especially embarrassing when when one spouse got updated and the other not. Anyhow, get to early voting and you will get registered. Bring your HAVA proof of residency.

The early voting places seem to have gotten more consistent on letting you use a list of candidates from your phone (thanks Charlie Reece), but the judges on Election Day will probably still be all over the place on this.

If you are on the Durham County side and want to vote early with minimal lines, try the new sites such as the Frontier in RTP.

Regards, pat
