Downtown's New SmART Vision Plan Ready for Implementation
Downtown Durham's new SmART Vision Plan<http://cityordinances.durhamnc.gov/OnBaseAgendaOnline/Documents/ViewDocument/Final-Published%20Attachment%20-%2011460%20-%20MEMO%20-%20DOWNTOWN%20DURHAM%20SMART%20VISION%20PLAN.pdf?meetingId=155&documentType=Agenda&itemId=2328&publishId=9121&isSection=false> is ready to be implemented. The plan is a 10-year art driven economic development strategy centered around Blackwell, Corcoran, and Foster streets. The goal is to draw pedestrians into an exciting environment that connects cultural, retail, restaurant, and entertainment venues. City to Continue Collaboration with Made In Durham for Education-to-Work Pipeline
The City will continue its collaboration with Made In Durham to develop an education-to-work pipeline<http://cityordinances.durhamnc.gov/OnBaseAgendaOnline/Documents/ViewDocument/Final-Published%20Attachment%20-%2011429%20-%20MEMO%20-%20DESCRIBING%20AGREEMENT%20WITH%20MADE%20IN.pdf?meetingId=155&documentType=Agenda&itemId=2336&publishId=9128&isSection=false>. Made In Durham is a non-profit that is working to connect Durham youth and young adults to postsecondary credentials and economically rewarding work. The City will pay the organization $100,000 to support its work to develop internships and career exploration opportunities for summer 2017.

Public Works Department Increases Capacity to Handle New Sidewalk Projects
The Public Works Department is increasing its capacity to handle several sidewalk projects throughout Durham. The City will pay $750,000 for project management services<http://cityordinances.durhamnc.gov/OnBaseAgendaOnline/Documents/ViewDocument/Final-Published%20Attachment%20-%2011443%20-%20MEMO%20-%20SW-49C%20CONSULTANT%20PROJECT%20MANAGER%20.pdf?meetingId=155&documentType=Agenda&itemId=2334&publishId=9135&isSection=false> for eight federally funded pedestrian and bicycle projects, which will allow the department to deliver these new projects faster.

City to Apply for Big Jump Project
In an effort to promote bicycling in Durham, the City is applying for a Big Jump Project<http://cityordinances.durhamnc.gov/OnBaseAgendaOnline/Documents/ViewDocument/Final-Published%20Attachment%20-%2011459%20-%20MEMO%20-%20BIG%20JUMP%20PROJECT%20-%2011_7_2016.pdf?meetingId=155&documentType=Agenda&itemId=2318&publishId=9109&isSection=false>. Big Jump is a three-year project to help 10 communities in the U.S. achieve a major increase in bicycling. Durham's application will focus on the area that includes downtown, east Durham, Duke University and Medical Center, North Carolina Central University, and Durham Technical Community College and surrounding neighborhoods.
