County Fire Marshal Asks Residents to Suspend Outdoor Burning

Durham, NC - November 22, 2016- Durham County Fire Marshal Jim Groves has recommended that residents suspend all outdoor burning within Durham County until weather conditions become safer. The Fire Marshal's recommendation is due to the extremely low surface soil moisture, low humidity, lack of significant rain since Hurricane Matthew in early October, and no significant rain forecast through the end of November 2016.

Fire Marshal Groves requests that our residents and visitors take preventive measures such as not building campfires, not burning leaves, not building bon fires, and making sure fireplace ashes are completely extinguished and cool before disposal. "With the existing environmental conditions, a small fire could easily turn into a large woods or brush fire. Please take this request seriously to avoid putting yourselves, our responders, or other people's property at risk."
